Bird Box - Seattle Maker Faire 2014

We were welcomed back to the 2014 Seattle Mini Maker Faire at the Experience Music Project. We used the Bird Box from the grocery strike, created custom graphics for the show, and had a prominent location in the lobby at the information booth.

Aha! A Bright Idea

Katie and I entered the Mighty Tieton Chandelier Festival and we won! Our entry was a 24 inch tall light bulb, modeled in Rhino, and laser cut from dulcote. There is a motion sensor facing downwards that triggers the light when someone walks underneath. We call it Aha! A Bright Idea!

Bird Box - Grocery Strike

In the fall of 2013, grocery workers threatened a strike. It is required by law that they give 72 hours notice and they staged a 3-day count-down in Westlake Center. With 2 days notice, Andrew, Katie and I were able to put together a weather proof Bird Box, custom graphics, and a live webcam. The strike was averted as both sides negotiated a deal while they continuously watched the live images from our camera and the twitter stream we promoted.

Bird Box - Greendrinks

For their 10th anniversary, Seattle Greendrinks commissioned us to create another Bird Box with the “simple” requirement that it was portable. Their event moves around and they generally use a SmartCar from Car2Go. Andrew and I worked our magic and fit the entire device in an antique suitcase complete with Edison bulb sconces, mechanical bell, LCD screen, and vintage charm.

Bird Box - Seattle Maker Faire 2013

For the 2013 Seattle Maker Faire we repurposed the Smash Putt Bird Box, changed up the slides and created a custom mounting stand. We were not allowed to touch the walls at The Seattle Center so the entire installation needed to be freestanding.

Bird Box - Smash Putt

Smash Putt brings with it much different requirements then the Bird Box we had at Office Nomads. It needed to be loud, flashy and drunk-proof. We went with the Raspberry Pi at the heart and added a screen and a camera. The camera was purely to get people’s attention and it worked!

The First Bird Box

The first Bird Box we created used an Arduino that simply polled Twitter for a given string and activated a light if it was found. When Twitter updated their API to require OAuth authentication the Arduino was no longer feasible but by that time the Raspberry Pi had been released.

Nadine Coworking System

Nadine is an open source system for facilitating a coworking community. There is a kiosk located at the front desk where members sign-in each day and new visitors are entered in the system. Members can connect via the web interface, explore other members and what is happening around the space. Staff members have rich data and statistics on how the business is running and dynamic, data-driven to-do lists to help new and exiting members.

Seattle Collaborative Space Alliance

The mission of the Seattle Collaborative Space Alliance (SCSA) is to unify, support and promote the coworking and collaborative space movement. We are a distributed community of space owners, managers, members, and community catalysts who share a passion for coworking and collaboration in and around the Seattle metro area.

Office Nomads

Office Nomads is a coworking community in Capitol Hill, Seattle. We are dedicated to cultivating a dynamic, creative and collaborative environment for Seattle’s nomadic workforce. We believe that by working together we can accomplish more than we could alone. If you have the ability to work from anywhere, why not work alongside others? Working independently doesn’t mean sacrificing a support system.
